INITIAL IDEA
Here I have outlined the layout of my article page.
The text will be in a list format, since research shows that audiences are more attracted to lists. Since by audience is younger, I relayed on images to break up the text, which would other wise be a long block of text. The images would be directly linked to each item mentioned in the text. The text will wrap around images, to create a flow between the two, creating some interesting shapes, which will engages the audience. I will use guidelines to ensure that the text is in an ordered form. |
ARTICLE TEXT:
THE BEST FASHION TRENDS OF 2018. Our Annual List Of Trends That We Loved In 2018
The world of male fashion has greatly expanded this year, with icons all over the world stepping out of their comfort space, and challenging stereotypes. New trends have come and go, and with the year coming to an end, we are hoping that these fashion trend stay around for the new year.
Reference to new year- temporal relevance. ‘icon’ – name of magazine but also term used for significant people in the fashion world – creates a link between respected fashion stylist and the magazine, further building its brand.
BE GONE, SKINNY JEANS
Uncomfortable, tight, and downright nasty. Skinny jeans for men were a thing of 2017, but finally the nightmare for lanky boys is out, and dad jeans are in! This 90’s throwback is loose, breezy, fashionable and extremely versatile. It’s like the Riesling of trousers; THEY GO WITH EVERYTHING! Pair this item with long socks and vans and make sure to cuff them. ICON is a big fan of these jeans and we recommend that you pick this up next time you go shopping.
‘BE GONE, SKINNY JEANS’ – a play on a well-known phrase that the audience will recognize – further imbedding the playful theme, while also staying relevant. Implies that skinny jeans are out of fashion, being taken over by a new trend.
GRUNGE
Remember that emo phase you went through and have spent the last 10 years trying to remove all those cringey memories from your mind? Well, it’s time to search through your old clothes and take out the edgiest pieces, ‘cause grunge is back and, hopefully, here to stay. The key to this trend, is layers, but keep it simple. A thrashers shirt under denim overalls is a simple, yet effective outfit to give you that edgy look.
Use of irony helps further the playful theme that is seen through the colour scheme, into the text. Rhetorical question makes audiences feel a connect to the magazine, filling the audiences gratification of personal identity.
YOU MUST OWN A WINDBREAKER
Another throwback to the 90’s made a huge impact on fashion this year: the windbreaker. So conventional, so colourful. The thin fabric coat designed to resist wind, chill and light rain, is the perfect street style piece to perfect your outfit. If you’re looking to invest in one, we highly recommend TOMMY HILFIGER’s Retro Block Windbreaker or/and KAPPA’s Banda Dawson Windbreaker. These two really caught ICON’s eye.
‘YOU’ use of direct language creates a connection between the page and the reader, further engaging them.
GET SOME CHECKS
Checks took over the AW18 menswear shows, and really influenced the men’s fashion world. Checks were everywhere this year: on coats, trousers, shirts, jackets and even shoes. The unique pattern comes in various version and creates a fancy and high end look for you outfit. Checks are also a great way to take a boring outfit to the next level. Our personal favorite checkered piece this year, that we highly recommend you pick for next year is the Loafers by Burberry.
‘Our personal favourite’ – by giving personal opinions, the text seems more colloquial, making the audience feel as if they are getting tips from a friend
PRETTY UGLY SHOES
Basic superstar Adidas are a thing of the past! ‘Ugly Shoes’ took over this year and was the coolest trend this year! Not only did they break boundaries, but it let icons everywhere express themselves fully through the colourful statements pieces. If you already don’t own these gems, then make sure to pick up the chunky ugly sneakers from Adidas (preferably the Adidas Falcon Sneaker ‘cause those are dope).
Play on words engages audience. Reference to previous fashion trends that the audience will recognize – ‘Basic superstar Adidas’
TURTLENECK SUITS
Suiting never goes out of style, but there are ways to keep your tailored look appearing on-trend each season. This year, it’s all about what you pair your suit with. So, when the weather gets cold, swap your usual shirt for a turtleneck sweater. By combining a turtleneck with a smart suit, you’ll be able to achieve an incredibly stylish and sleek look. You’ll see this trend being worn on red carpets next year.

IMAGES USED:
This is one of my own images, that i took in the studio. I edited it in light room, making him more tan (decreasing the contrast) as well as making the red in his shirt more vibrant (increasing the red hue). I also used the spot healing tool in Photoshop, to create flawless skin. To make the images more suitable, i used the selection tool, to cut him out of the box image, so that he fit into the white background.
This image will be directly linked to the text - 'Grunge' - and so his costume (mise en scene) was very important. The black shirt and beanie is stereotypical iconography that the audience will relate to the word grunge. |
This is also one of my own images taken in a theme park. I heavily edited this image in lightroom, to create this bright and colourful final image, by playing around with the hues, split toning and colour calibration tools. I did this so that it would better fit the colour scheme, creating a flow between all three pieces.
To make this image more suitable for my planned format, i decided to flip the image. I wanted to cut Jack (stripy shirt) out of the image, so that he'd be coming out of the box (since part of ICONs brand is out of the box fashion), and also wanted to put this image in the right bottom corner. By flipping the image, i am able to put the cut out part in the corner, so not disrupting the text. This image is not related directly to the text, however does help carry the theme. |
STep by step PROCESS:

When sitting with my focus group and teacher, they pointed out a few technical issues that needed to be fixed. First, the numbers were too close to the text, so i moved them further away. I also flipped the Tommy Hilfiger windbreaker, so that the writing was going the right way. This meant that i had to change the format of the text, making sure it wrapped around the images.
The picture of the jeans was not the best quality, so I switched it out for a better version. I had also stretched out the picture of Mirsub (bottom mirsub), which was more obvious then i had thought, so i inserted the original image in order to keeps its original scale. They also told me that the title was slightly misleading, so I decided to change the title to a more simple and suitable one. |
